I really liked the "Darkness" storyline in the ongoing comic series. One of the moer intersting characters in
this story was Master Zao, so I had to make him. He is of the same species as Teemto Pagalies, a
pod racer in TPM. It would have been sooo much easier if I had a Teemto figure to work with, but
since the Big H isn't on the ball (hehe), I had to work from scratch. I started with the head, since it is
very distinct. I took a Watto head and cut off the nose. Then I took a ponytail each from 2 Obi-Wans
for his "ears;" superglued them on and used Sculpey to blend them in. Next, I cut a couple of the
"bulb" things off of Malakili's boots and glued them to Zao's face for eyes. Then I sculpted the upper
part of his face; upper lip, nose, around the eyes. I cured all the Sculpey and painted the eyes white
with gray pupils (Zao is blind), his nostrils black, the "exposed" part of his face tan, and the under side
light skin tone. Next I sculpted the sleeves and gauntlets ontot the arms. I painted the body, skirt,
and sleeves green with a tan drybrushing, the gauntlets dark gray, and his skin tan. I took a harness
from the Sith accessory set (I think) and cobbled together a bandolier that I then painted brown and
superglued to his body. Now onto the legs. I cut off Anakin's shoes and superglued Boss Nass's
feet to the legs, adding some sculpey to blend it together. The pants were painted navy blue-gray,
the leg wraps are dark gray, the feet are tan again, and his toenails are gray. I cut the tail off of a JP3
dino pack-in and sculpted on the barb at the end. I painted the whole thing tan and superglued it
to his posterior (had to cut some off of the skirt to make it fit. I then assembled the pieces and
started on the lightsaber/staff. Basically I cut an approximately 3 inch piece of 1/8th" dowel rod, then
stuck a blob of sculpey on the end. I took a spare saber blade I had (blue, which was convenient) and
pushed it into the sculpey to make a recess. I removed the blade and cured the sculpey. Once
hardened, I painted the whole thing tan with streaks of brown, then coated the "emitter array"
with superglue, to keep it from breaking apart. The blade is still removeable. All in all, I am
pretty happy with this one. The arms are alittle loose, so I might just superglue them into place. Also,
he is a little taller and thinner than the comic art; not much I could do for the waist and still make
it look good, but I might get around to cutting some of the leg wrappings off someday. |
